For Immediate Release – May 8, 2013

LOS ANGELES, May 8, 2013 – From June 25th – 27th, Palomino will host the Blackwing Experience at the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity in Costa Mesa, CA. The three-day exhibit celebrating creativity, pencils and the people who use them will kick off with the Party for the Pencil on Tuesday, June 25th at 7pm. The Party will feature, music, drinks, interactive games and exhibits, a timeline covering over 2000 years of pencil history and much more.

Blackwing 602s were the pencil of choice for many pencil aficionados throughout the 20th Century and featured a lead so soft many said it felt like butter. From its unique replaceable eraser and ferrule, to the iconic tagline “Half the Pressure, Twice the Speed,” Blackwings were beloved by many. However, in 1998, production ceased and Blackwing fans everywhere began to scramble to get them. At one point, Blackwing pencils sold for as much as $40 per pencil on eBay. In 2010, California Cedar Products Company’s Palomino line of premium lifestyle products reintroduced the Blackwing. Its release was met with enthusiastic reviews from a number of media outlets, including Mark Frauenfelder of Boing Boing and Alex Beam of the Boston Globe, among others.

Last year, Palomino hosted the first-ever Blackwing Experience at the Art Directors Club in New York City. The exhibit’s opening party attracted hundreds of writers, artists, musicians and socialites from the Manhattan area.

Looney Tunes creator and Blackwing user Chuck Jones celebrated creativity in all of its forms, and Blackwing Experience attendees will be able to do the same. In addition to the opening party, the exhibit will feature a “Chuck Talk,” a panel discussion on creativity featuring Charles Solomon, Chuck Jones’ grandson Craig Kausen, Palomino founder Charles Berolzheimer and others.

On Thursday, June 27th at 7pm, the exhibit will host a benefit concert for the Blackwing Foundation, a non-profit established by the Berolzheimer family to support innovative K-12 arts and music programs.

“We want to help people express themselves creatively at all levels. Through the Blackwing Foundation and events like the Blackwing Experience, we’re doing just that while creating a new generation of Blackwing artists.” – Charles Berolzheimer

The exhibition runs free and open to the public with scheduled programming from Tuesday June 25th through Thursday June 27th. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 10:00am – 6:00pm. 3321 Hyland Avenue, Costa Mesa, CA 92626.

The Blackwing Pearl is Coming

Today we officially announced that a new version of the Blackwing pencil will be introduced next month! The “Blackwing Pearl” will have a lustrous white finish and a “balanced and smooth” performance that falls in the middle of the two existing Palomino Blackwing pencils. We hope it appeals to not only those dealers and consumers who have been asking for a white version, but to those who prefer something a little firmer than the Palomino Blackwing yet softer than the 602.

I’m sure some of you may be wondering if more colors and grades are on the horizon. Though we’ll never close the door on anything that could help us grow our brand and get quality tools into as many hands as possible, at this point we feel like the Blackwing line of pencils provides ample options both in terms of performance and appearance. For those hoping we extend the line even further, we encourage you to instead check out our original Palomino graded range of graphite pencils or our Imagine Series pencils that feature our Palomino HB lead in ten different lacquer colors.

We realize that some traditionalists probably think three models is already too many. We hope you’ll understand that our efforts to grow the brand are motivated not only by the sustainability of the products but by our mission to inspire creative expression in as many people as possible.

Over the years, Blackwing pencils have varied in terms of hardness, color and even manufacturer. But pencils that bear the Blackwing name have always been and will always be of the utmost quality and made from premium materials. We appreciate all of the support and hope you’ll continue to help us celebrate the legacy of this great brand as it moves into the future!

About Ted Russell Kamp:
Ted Russell Kamp is a Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Well known as the long time bassist and collaborator for Shooter Jennings, No Depression Magazine calls Ted “one of the most underrated songwriters in the business today… a born storyteller… in the tradition of great troubadours like Guy Clark.”

Introduced in the 1930’s but discontinued in the mid 90’s, the Blackwing 602 was the pencil of choice for Grammy and Academy Award winning artists. After demand sent prices of a single Blackwing pencil up to $40, the Blackwing was brought back in two distinct models, the Palomino Blackwing for artists and composers, and the Palomino Blackwing 602 for writers and everyday users.

STOCKTON, CA, July 26, 2012 – Palomino, maker of the iconic Blackwing pencil, has announced a shift in production of its Prospector school pencils from Thailand to the United States. Besides a social desire to bring production to the USA, the move will allow Palomino to shorten its supply chain and gain added inventory flexibility. Palomino’s Prospector pencils are focused on students and teachers and were designed to address the need for an affordable, high-quality pencil to counter the off-center, imported pencils currently in the hands of many students. The pencils are now available for purchase exclusively at

“Many people don’t understand the benefits of a quality pencil nor the impact it can have on a child’s education,” said Charles Berolzheimer, CEO of Palomino and its parent company California Cedar Products. “High-quality pencils with well centered leads that sharpen evenly and easily save precious classroom time, increase the quality of work and give students added confidence.”

Rowley, Massachusetts school teacher William Maguire states that using high-quality pencils in his classroom resulted “in better results and students who take greater pride in their work and exude more confidence.” He also notes that when higher-quality pencils are used, “writing is approached with greater willingness because it involves using a favorite pencil.”

In a post on Getting Kids Reading, children’s literacy expert Joyce Grant wrote that giving a high-quality pencil to your child “will actually help with his [or her] school work,” further compounding the idea that the seemingly simple pencil is actually an integral part of our children’s educational development.

Palomino also plans to shift production of its Golden Bear line of high-quality multi-use pencils to the United States later this year.

Palomino is a division of California Cedar Products Company, the leading worldwide manufacturer of wooden pencil slats. Palomino’s mission is to provide people with high-quality, wood cased pencils in its Palomino Original, Blackwing, ForestChoice, Golden Bear and Prospector brands.

NEW YORK, March 29, 2012 – Join THE BLACKWING EXPERIENCE, running April 16-20th at The Art Directors Club. The week long celebration of creativity and innovation will kick off with a party on Tuesday, April 17th, 7pm-10pm. Enjoy beer/wine and light snacks while enjoying music by Christian Tamburr & Dominick Farinacci, art curated by BIPOLART, live projection drawing by Shantell Martin, photography by Guest of a Guest and much more.

Learn why a pencil has been celebrated by greats such as Chuck Jones, Truman Capote, and John Steinbeck.
“…I sang a paean of praise to the Blackwing pencil, followed by a lament over its disappearance. Good news—it’s been reissued… It’s now called the Palomino Blackwing” and “the new improved version as the Palomino Blackwing 602” – Stephen Sondheim (Look, I Made A Hat)

Blackwing 602’s were the pencil of choice throughout the 20th Century and featured a lead so soft some said it felt like butter. From its unique replaceable eraser and ferrule, to the iconic tagline “Half the Pressure, Twice the Speed,” Blackwings were beloved by many of the greatest creative minds of our time. However, in 1998, production ceased and even luminaries like Stephen Sondheim had to scramble to get them. At one point, Blackwings even went for as much as $40 per pencil on eBay. The decision to bring back the Blackwing was due in part to a passionate online community of bloggers and, upon its release, it received enthusiastic reviews from a number of media outlets, including Mark Frauenfelder of Boing Boing and Alex Beam of the Boston Globe, among others.

Thanks to California Cedar Products CEO Charles Berolzheimer, whose family’s roots in the pencil industry date back to the mid 19th century, the Blackwing pencil is back with two updated versions. The Palomino Blackwing, with its smooth and expressive line, is the perfect tool for visual artists. The Palomino Blackwing 602, with a slightly firmer graphite formulation, is more closely modeled after the original and preferred by wordsmiths and everyday users.

The exhibit and party will include contemporary artists’ homage to the pencil, the Chuck Jones Center of Creativity, artisanal pencil sharpening, antique pencil memorabilia, and opportunities for attendees to create their own mini- masterpieces.

“My mission is to create a new generation of Blackwing artists.” Charles Berolzheimer

The exhibition runs free and open to the public with scheduled programming throughout the week until Friday, April 20th, 2012. Gallery hours Monday-Friday, 10:00 am-6:00 pm. 106 West 29th Street, New York, NY 10011
