The front of each box features an image of the enclosed pencil model, along with a clear description of the graphite performance.

The back of each box features the story of the Blackwing pencil, along with a description of the features that define the Blackwing experience.

The interior of each box features a pencil-inspired design (and a dozen pencils of course!).

Blackwing Slate is more than just a journal, it’s a companion to the Blackwing pencil, and it’s coming 08/04/2014.

Introducing the Chuck Jones Edition Blackwing 602

Over the weekend, What’s Up Doc? The Animation Art of Chuck Jones exhibit opened at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. The exhibit, which has already booked four stops on its six year tour, is the result of a partnership between the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service that seeks to “reveal the creative genius behind some of the most enduringly popular cartoons and animated films of all time.”

To coincide with the opening of the exhibit, we’re excited to announce a collaboration of our own: we’ve partnered with the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity to release the Chuck Jones Edition Blackwing 602 pencil set. This limited edition set includes 12 Blackwing pencils, a print of an original sketch by Chuck Jones (created with a Blackwing 602 pencil in the 1950s), and a hand-numbered certificate of authenticity.

The Blackwing 602 pencils included are the same Palomino Blackwing 602s you know and love, but they come stocked with a pink eraser, like the one Mr. Jones used throughout his award-winning career. They also come packaged in a commemorative box that gives some background on Chuck Jones and his history with Blackwing pencils.

These pencils will be available online exclusively at and in portion of the proceeds from these limited edition sets will help the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity continue to recognize, support and inspire excellence in art.

A Look Behind the Design of the Blackwing Slate

Austin Kleon tells his readers to “show your work,” so here’s a look at the development of the Blackwing Slate, from initial concept, to the design, name and execution.

The Concept

The process of designing the Blackwing Slate started in January thanks, in large part, to social media. Every day, Blackwing users show off their latest creations using the #Blackwing hashtag. We were confident we had provided people with a fantastic tool to create with, but haven’t focused enough on a place to capture their creations. We knew we needed to create a journal that made it more convenient to create.

We wanted to design the definitive Blackwing journal and a companion to the Blackwing pencil. We also wanted to create something that would serve as a jumping on point for those who have not yet had the chance to try a Blackwing pencil for themselves. Once we established the initial concept, we started designing.

The Design

Immediately, we knew we wanted to include a Blackwing pencil with every journal. We also know we wanted to keep the design simple, timeless and un-intrusive, like the pencils it was meant to accompany. Finally, we knew the materials had to be durable to be able to withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. After several design discussions, we settled on a design.

This design not only fit our concept aesthetically, but philosophically. The backbone of this entire project is the Blackwing pencil. The backbone of a journal is its spine.

The Name

By far, the most challenging part of this project was coming up with a name. The entire team here at Palomino had a hand in coming up with the final name for the Blackwing Slate, and we took many factors into consideration, namely:  we didn’t want to call it a notebook. Blackwing users choose Blackwing for several reasons, not just taking notes and writing in their diaries and we didn’t want them to feel alienated or generalized with this new item. The other big factor is that the name had to inspire something.

As we look back at the list of names, it’s clear that we  wanted to convey the idea of capturing and storing a users’ creations. In the end, however, we decided that this product was actually much more than that. It was not only a place to capture and store a user’s creations, but something to inspire them, a blank slate with endless possibilities. Thus, the Blackwing Slate was born.

The Details

After we finalized the name, we began looking at the details. Taking cues from the writing slate, one of the old writing surfaces, we decided to give the notebook a smooth, matte black finish . In keeping with the minimalist style, we left the front cover unbranded, opting instead to have the Blackwing logo debossed discretely on the bottom of the back cover. (To read more about this unique cover, check out our materials post.)

We then designed the bellyband and Blackwing info page found in every Blackwing Slate:

Finally, after settling on the materials (including the journal’s extra-thick paper, but you can read more about that here), we began production.

The Result

We’re still taking pre-orders for the first shipment of Blackwing Slates, so shoot us an email and place your order if you haven’t already!

Blackwing Slate – The Materials

Here’s a look at the anatomy of the new Blackwing Slate, designed to be the ultimate companion to our Blackwing pencils.

The Cover

True to its namesake, the Blackwing Slate features a smooth, matte black, hard cover that is both distinct and sophisticated. The cover is made out of a wear-resistant polymer designed to absorb the wear and tear of constant use without sacrificing form or function. The front cover is unbranded, while the back cover features the Blackwing logo discretely debossed at its base, and an elastic strap keeps the cover securely closed.

The Binding

BINDINGA journal is only as good as its binding, and every Blackwing Slate is dual-bound to ensure its durability. First, the pages are sewn-bound together, creating a “block” of pages. Then the cover is sewn-bound to the block to create the Blackwing Slate’s sturdy, dual-bound finish.

The Holster

SlateSideThe Blackwing Slate features a black canvas spine that is strong, yet flexible. The spine is equipped with a high-grade elastic loop,  a holster for your Blackwing, that ensures your pencil is always close at hand. Although this loop can accommodate most types of writing utensils, every Slate will come prepackaged with a Blackwing 602 pencil.

The Paper

BlackwingSlateRuledThe Blackwing Slate features 100 GSM paper.  GSM, or grams per square meter, refers to the paper’s thickness. A paper’s GSM can range from 10 (think tissue paper) to 180 and beyond (think greeting cards and cereal boxes). At 100 GSM, we are able to offer a high-quality, thick paper that pairs well with our Blackwing graphite, but still feels natural for everyday use. As a comparison, most notebooks and journals contain 70-80 GSM paper. The Blackwing Slate is available with ruled or plain paper.

The Interior

Every Blackwing Slate features a placeholder ribbon and a pocket to store any napkin notes or loose leaves from your travels. On the back page, you’ll find the story of the Blackwing pencil, along with 20 places you might find a Blackwing 602. The journal closes with a call for users to show us how they create with Blackwing using the #Blackwing hashtag.

Introducing the Blackwing Slate

We are proud to announce that the newest addition to the Blackwing family, the Blackwing Slate, will be ready to ship later this month in limited quantities. All authorized dealers are able to to pre-order these unique journals beginning today. Because there is a limited number of journals available in the first run, orders will be taken on a first come-first served basis. There will be a 48 unit maximum quantity for all dealers. Minimum order quantity is 12 units.

Every Slate comes prepackaged with a Palomino Blackwing 602 pencil, conveniently nestled in a pencil holster located on the binding of each book.

Available in plain or ruled styles, the Slate is a medium sized, hardbound journal featuring 160 sewn bound, acid free pages on sturdy 100 GSM paper to allow artists and writers alike to create on a clean slate with every turn of the page. To ensure the Slate stands the test of time, the pages are sewn-bound between two matte black, hard covers.

A natural companion to Blackwing pencils, we have taken great care to ensure that this book stands tall with the rest of the Blackwing family of products in terms of quality, performance and uniqueness.

The Blackwing Pearl is Coming

Today we officially announced that a new version of the Blackwing pencil will be introduced next month! The “Blackwing Pearl” will have a lustrous white finish and a “balanced and smooth” performance that falls in the middle of the two existing Palomino Blackwing pencils. We hope it appeals to not only those dealers and consumers who have been asking for a white version, but to those who prefer something a little firmer than the Palomino Blackwing yet softer than the 602.

I’m sure some of you may be wondering if more colors and grades are on the horizon. Though we’ll never close the door on anything that could help us grow our brand and get quality tools into as many hands as possible, at this point we feel like the Blackwing line of pencils provides ample options both in terms of performance and appearance. For those hoping we extend the line even further, we encourage you to instead check out our original Palomino graded range of graphite pencils or our Imagine Series pencils that feature our Palomino HB lead in ten different lacquer colors.

We realize that some traditionalists probably think three models is already too many. We hope you’ll understand that our efforts to grow the brand are motivated not only by the sustainability of the products but by our mission to inspire creative expression in as many people as possible.

Over the years, Blackwing pencils have varied in terms of hardness, color and even manufacturer. But pencils that bear the Blackwing name have always been and will always be of the utmost quality and made from premium materials. We appreciate all of the support and hope you’ll continue to help us celebrate the legacy of this great brand as it moves into the future!

You can read the full release here.
